“Getting to know yourself; getting along with yourself” teen programme

Beyondblue’s secondary school program for years 8–10 (teens aged between 12 and 16) aims to equip students with the ability to deal with adverse events through the teaching of ‘life skills’ within a supportive and safe school environment.

The program is built around the development of six senses that act as protective factors against mental health problems:

  1. sense of self-worth
  2. sense of control
  3. sense of belonging
  4. sense of purpose
  5. sense of future
  6. sense of humour.

The Year 10 Program is also supported by a 10-episode DVD program that uses the concept of a reality TV program. The Strong Box follows the lives of six young people as they compete against each other on a number of challenges, with the winner being awarded the Strong Box Prize.

The DVD is used to clearly illustrate the six key senses that underpin the Classroom Curriculum Program – sense of self-worth, sense of control, sense of belonging, sense of purpose, sense of future, and sense of humour.
