ACES Explained Infographic for Supporting Children

One-page ACEs explained infographic defining adverse childhood experiences and showing how abuse, neglect and difficult home experiences can affect children, with supportive actions that help.

Explaining adverse childhood experiences to parents, carers, teachers or older children can be difficult when the conversation needs to stay clear, calm and non-blaming. A concise ACEs infographic can help introduce abuse, neglect and difficult home experiences, while also showing how safety, trusted adults and early support can improve outcomes for children.

The “What are ACEs?” panel sets out adverse childhood experiences in three clear groups: abuse, neglect and difficult home experiences such as domestic abuse, substance misuse, mental illness, separation, divorce or imprisonment. The wording is simple enough for family work, safeguarding conversations and trauma-informed training.

A middle section explains how ACEs can affect children day to day, including a stress system that stays on high alert, big feelings that are harder to manage, difficulties with trust and relationships, reduced concentration and behaviour that may communicate stress, fear or unmet needs. These points are useful for reframing behaviour without blaming the child.

The infographic also includes a short “important to know” message, making it clear that ACEs do not decide a child’s future. It highlights that children can heal when they feel safe and supported, and that one caring relationship can make a significant difference.

The final section focuses on what helps: safety, predictable routines, being listened to, a trusted adult and early support. Practitioners, school staff, foster carers and parents could use it as a printable handout, a prompt in family meetings, or a quick visual reminder during discussions about childhood trauma, resilience and protective relationships.
