Having the first session mapped out in writing can make it easier for participants to settle into an ACT course and understand what is expected between meetings. The booklet introduces an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy course for people managing depression and/or anxiety while also living with a long-term health condition.

The opening pages explain the purpose of the course, encouraging participants to read the workbook after sessions, revisit the material, and set aside time each week to practise the techniques. It also outlines attendance expectations, including what to do if a session is missed and why completing the relevant reading and homework tasks matters.

A practical group agreement section is included for online sessions, covering cameras, microphones, taking turns to speak, confidentiality, respecting different views, punctuality, and not attending under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There is space for the group to add extra rules agreed together, which would be useful for facilitators running therapy groups, wellbeing courses, or NHS talking therapies sessions.

The booklet also includes a keeping-safe section with support options between sessions, including urgent GP appointments, NHS 111, A&E, Samaritans, Connection, and trusted friends, family members or professionals. Participants are prompted to record useful phone numbers so they are easier to access when feeling distressed or unsafe.

A simple personal safety plan template is provided, with space to note signs that mood is deteriorating and steps that may help, including where to get support. It is most suited to adults attending an ACT for long-term health conditions group, and may also be useful for therapists, psychological wellbeing practitioners, counsellors, support workers and healthcare staff preparing clients for group-based mental health support.
