Build space between difficult thoughts, feelings and actions with a printable set of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, metaphor cards. Adults can use the short reflections and practical questions to notice anxiety, uncertainty, self-criticism and emotional discomfort without letting them dictate the next step.
In a one-to-one therapy session, counselling appointment or wellbeing group, these ACT cards give adults a concrete way to talk about internal experiences that can otherwise feel hard to explain. They are suited to therapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers and adults using ACT-based self-help for anxiety, worry, low confidence, grief or overwhelming feelings.
Each card uses an accessible metaphor followed by a brief explanation and a “Try this” reflection prompt. Visible examples include the radio in your head for thoughts that are not instructions, a pop-up ad for intrusive thoughts, an unwanted passenger for anxiety, and a weather forecast for changing emotions.
Further cards explore dropping the rope in a tug of war with anxiety, quicksand and the struggle to get rid of feelings, a compass for values-based choices, and a next stepping stone for taking manageable action without having the whole plan. The backpack, rear-view mirror, alarm and storyteller cards also address carrying painful experiences, learning from the past, responding to anxiety alarms and questioning the stories the mind creates.
Cards can be printed, cut out and selected during adult therapy, ACT counselling, coaching, supervision or personal reflection. The prompts encourage defusion, acceptance, present-moment awareness, values clarification and committed action in plain language, making them useful conversation starters when someone needs help identifying one small, workable next move.
