Behaviour is Communication Poster for Parents and Carers

Printable poster titled Behaviour is Communication explaining what a child may be trying to communicate through overwhelm, sensory overload, need for connection, executive function struggles and masking.

Parents and carers are supported to look beyond difficult behaviour and consider what a child may be trying to communicate through shouting, crying, withdrawing, refusing tasks, seeking closeness, or becoming overwhelmed. The poster uses the central message, “See the message, not just the behaviour,” to frame behaviour as communication rather than deliberate misbehaviour.

Clear sections explain common reasons behind challenging behaviour in children, including being overwhelmed rather than bad, sensory overload rather than misbehaviour, needing connection rather than attention, and struggling with executive function. It also highlights masking, which can mean a child appears to cope at school or in public but releases stress at home where they feel safer.

The wording is brief and parent-friendly, making it suitable as a visual reminder for home, family support sessions, parenting work, foster care support, early help, social work direct work, and discussions with school staff. It may be particularly useful for parents of autistic children, children with ADHD, children with sensory processing differences, and kids who find transitions, instructions, busy environments, or emotional regulation difficult.

Practical response ideas are included at the bottom of the poster, such as staying calm, validating feelings, offering choices, using simple language, reducing demands in the moment, celebrating small wins, and building trust. These prompts can help adults shift from correction or punishment towards connection, co-regulation, patience and emotional safety.

The poster works well as a one-page handout, fridge reminder, office display, or conversation starter when exploring behaviour, meltdowns, sensory needs, attachment, anxiety, neurodiversity and child development with families. Credited to Edita Stiborova.
