Overthinking Journal for Anxiety: CBT ABC Worksheets

Cover and sample pages from a CBT overthinking and anxiety workbook explaining the connection between situations, thoughts, emotions and behaviours, with ABC thought diary exercises.

Daily reflection, therapy discussions and classroom wellbeing work can all benefit from a simple way to separate what happened from the thoughts and feelings that followed. This CBT overthinking journal for anxiety introduces the ABC model and provides thought diary space for noticing anxious thinking, emotional reactions, physical sensations and avoidance behaviours.

Teenagers, adults and clients who get caught in worry spirals, self-critical thoughts or social anxiety are the most suitable users for this printable CBT journal. It may also support counsellors, therapists, school pastoral staff and parents who want a clear starting point for talking through overthinking without asking someone to explain everything at once.

The workbook begins by linking situations, thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It then explains the ABC model: an activating event, the beliefs or automatic thoughts connected to it, and the emotional and behavioural consequences. Examples include entering a party, fearing that others will judge you, panic, stress, rapid breathing and stopping for water.

A thought diary exercise prompts the user to identify the specific situation, list the statements going through their mind and underline the most distressing, or “hot”, thought. The consequences section encourages them to name emotions, rate their intensity from 0 to 100, and record relevant body sensations or actions.

Two blank ABC analysis templates offer room to practise with recent stressful, overwhelming or anxiety-provoking moments. A young person could complete one after a difficult social interaction, while an adult may use it between counselling sessions to spot patterns in anxious thoughts, beliefs and avoidance. The format is also suitable for guided one-to-one CBT work.
