Behaviour Is Communication Wheel for Children’s Needs

Colourful behaviour is communication wheel for children showing four areas: seeking connection, overwhelmed, sensory needs and protecting themselves, with related feelings, behaviours and helpful adult responses.

Parents, carers, teachers, family support workers and children’s therapists looking for a simple child behaviour chart may find this printable communication wheel useful. It reframes challenging behaviour, meltdowns, defiance, clinginess and sensory behaviours as possible messages about unmet emotional, relational or sensory needs, making it easier to respond with curiosity rather than blame.

A quick visual wheel helps adults pause and ask what a child might be trying to communicate through their actions. At the centre is the message, “Behaviour is communication. Look underneath the behaviour”, with four colour-coded areas around it to support reflection.

The wheel links common behaviours with possible underlying feelings. Seeking connection includes children who may feel lonely, unsure, in need of closeness or unnoticed, with signs such as clingy behaviour, interrupting, showing off or not wanting to separate.

Overwhelmed feelings are shown through being flooded, worried, frustrated or feeling that everything is too much. The matching behaviours include crying or shouting, refusing, melting down and shutting down, which makes it relevant for school staff, parents and carers managing emotional regulation difficulties.

Two further sections cover sensory needs and protecting themselves. Sensory needs may appear as fidgeting, covering ears, chewing things, pacing or moving a lot, while self-protective behaviour may include arguing, defiance, hitting, kicking or running away when a child feels unsafe, threatened, ashamed or not in control.

The bottom strip gives practical response prompts: stay calm and curious, notice patterns and triggers, name the feeling and the need, offer safety, connection and co-regulation, and keep boundaries clear and kind. It could be used as a poster, discussion prompt, parenting handout, classroom reminder or supervision tool.
