Grief Question Flash Cards for Children and Teens

Preview of printable grief question flash cards with pastel rainbow, sun, butterfly and flower illustrations, featuring prompts about bereavement, memories and coping with loss.

Gentle conversation starters can make it easier for a bereaved child, teenager or adult to put confusing feelings into words. These printable grief question flash cards offer 16 prompts about loss, memories, emotions, routines and ways of remembering a loved one, making them suitable for one-to-one bereavement support at home, in counselling or in a school pastoral session.

Each card contains one focused grief prompt, such as “What is your favourite memory with your loved one?”, “What do you miss the most?” and “Is there something you wish you had said?” The questions give children and young people a manageable choice of topics rather than requiring them to begin a difficult conversation from scratch.

Prompts also explore everyday changes after a death, including altered routines, family traditions, overwhelming emotions and difficult anniversaries. Questions about dreams, personal changes and what others should understand about grief can support deeper reflection when someone is ready to share.

The cards can be printed, cut out and selected one at a time during child bereavement counselling, grief therapy, school support meetings or family conversations. A parent, school counsellor, social worker or bereavement practitioner can invite the child or teen to skip any card, draw a picture, write an answer, or simply talk.

Designed as bereavement conversation cards and loss discussion prompts, the pack may be particularly helpful for primary-age children, teenagers and adults who find direct questions less daunting than open-ended discussion. The warm, simple wording supports remembrance activities while leaving room for each person’s individual experience of mourning.
