When you hurt feelings – Free PDF download

Colourful children's poster titled 'When You've Hurt Someone's Feelings' showing the HELP steps: Hear how they feel, Express that you care, Look for a way to help, and Put it right, illustrated with a fox and rabbit.

Everyday disagreements at home, in class or during play can become useful moments for reflection when children have clear words to follow. This colourful HELP apology poster gives young children a memorable framework for recognising hurt feelings, showing care and making things right after they have upset someone.

When a child has knocked over another child’s work, said something unkind or fallen out with a friend, finding the right response can be difficult in the moment. The poster introduces the HELP acronym as a simple apology and relationship-repair tool: Hear how they feel, Express that you care, Look for a way to help, and Put it right.

Each letter is paired with a short, child-friendly prompt and an illustrated scene. The images show a fox noticing a sad rabbit, offering comfort, helping with blocks, and rebuilding together. These visual examples make the sequence easier for younger kids, including children who benefit from concrete social-emotional learning prompts.

Teachers can display the poster in a classroom calm corner, friendship area, nurture group or playground space, then refer to the four steps during restorative conversations. School counsellors, pastoral staff and social workers may also use it in one-to-one sessions to practise empathy, apologies, making amends and problem solving through role play.

Parents, carers and early years practitioners can print it for home, nursery or reception settings and use the wording after sibling arguments or playtime conflicts. It is especially suited to primary-aged children who are learning how to repair a friendship after hurting somebody’s feelings, rather than simply being told to say sorry.
