Children are supported to understand their anxiety, recognise what happens in their thoughts and body, and build practical coping skills over a series of guided sessions. The workbook is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils and uses accessible language, visual prompts and simple exercises to make anxiety easier to explore with an adult.
The contents page shows a nine-session structure covering what worry and anxiety are, the vicious cycle of anxiety, body sensations, unhelpful thinking habits, being kind to yourself, facing fears, worrying less, helpful tips and keeping progress going. This makes it suitable for a planned piece of work in school, emotional wellbeing support, early help, counselling-style sessions or home-based support with parents and carers.
The opening pages include a workbook plan where children can decide when and where they will complete take-home tasks, as well as who they can ask for help if they feel stuck. The prompts include familiar options such as home, school, family and teacher, with space to draw other people or places, which helps younger children personalise the plan rather than simply read about anxiety.
A weekly anxiety tracking activity is included using thermometer scales from 0 to 10, helping children notice changes in their anxiety levels across the programme. The workbook also encourages children to rate different areas of life, such as mood, school, friendships and home, which can be useful for teachers, parents, carers and mental health practitioners supporting a child over time.
Best suited to children in Years 3 to 6 who experience worries, fears or anxious thoughts, the printable format can be used one-to-one, in small-group wellbeing work, or as take-home practice after a support session. The cover identifies MindMate Support Team and Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
