Use this printable Radical Acceptance Cycle poster during a difficult moment, in a DBT session, or as a calm prompt at home to work through what is happening without getting stuck fighting it. It is particularly suited to teenagers, adults and clients learning distress tolerance, emotional regulation and self-compassion skills.
Designed to help people move from resisting a painful reality towards a more workable next step, the Radical Acceptance Cycle offers a clear DBT radical acceptance framework. It supports users in recognising that acceptance does not mean approving, agreeing with, giving up on or pretending that a situation is alright.
The cycle begins with noticing reality without judgement, then acknowledging it with the words, “This is happening” and “This is what is true in this moment.” It follows with letting go of the fight, accepting the situation with kindness, and asking what can be done now to provide support or move forward in a helpful direction.
Later stages focus on taking small, realistic actions that fit personal values, reducing the extra suffering created by struggling against reality, and building flexibility through repeated practice. The central message, “Accept reality. Reduce suffering. Choose your next step,” makes the sequence easy to revisit during emotional overwhelm, change, conflict, loss or disappointment.
Mental health practitioners, DBT therapists, counsellors and support workers may use the poster as a visual teaching aid in one-to-one work or group skills sessions. Adults and teens can also print it for a coping folder, bedroom wall, wellbeing journal or crisis plan, using each numbered step as a brief grounding and decision-making prompt.
