How Feelings Show Up in Your Body: Body Clues Chart

Colourful circular chart showing how emotions such as anxious, angry, sad, scared, overwhelmed, embarrassed, excited, happy, calm and loved can appear as body sensations.

Parents, carers, teachers and child therapists can use this feelings in the body chart with children, teenagers and young people who find it easier to notice physical sensations than name an emotion. It offers a clear visual prompt for conversations about anxiety, anger, sadness, fear, happiness, excitement, calm, embarrassment, overwhelm and feeling loved or connected.

The anxious section links butterflies in the stomach, racing heart, shaky hands, tight chest, fast breathing, tense muscles and restlessness with anxious feelings. Other wedges identify similar body clues for anger, sadness, scared feelings and overwhelm, helping children see that one sensation can relate to more than one emotion.

A circular feelings wheel also covers calm, happy, excited, embarrassed, and loved and connected states. Each emotion is paired with everyday signs such as a relaxed jaw, warm feeling, blushing, low energy, wanting to hide, wanting to move, or wanting to stay near someone trusted.

School counsellors, pastoral staff, play therapists and family support workers could print the chart for a calm corner, emotional check-in area or one-to-one session. A child can point to a body clue first, then discuss possible feelings, triggers and what may help them feel safer or more settled.

Parents and carers may find it useful for gentle conversations at home after a difficult moment, before school, or at bedtime. The poster supports emotional literacy and body awareness without suggesting that a physical feeling has only one meaning, making it suitable for children and teens who are building their feelings vocabulary.
