IMPROVE the Moment – DBT Skill for Difficult Emotions

Printable DBT handout titled Improve the Moment, showing the IMPROVE coping skill acronym and reflective questions for managing overwhelming emotions.

In everyday practice, the IMPROVE skill can give clients a simple DBT distress tolerance framework to use when emotions feel intense and immediate problem-solving is not possible. The handout focuses on getting through a difficult moment safely, one step at a time, which makes it relevant for emotional regulation work, crisis survival skills, coping strategies, grounding, self-soothing and mental health support sessions.

The printable explains each part of the IMPROVE acronym clearly: Imagery, Meaning, Prayer, Relaxation, One Thing in the Moment, Vacation and Encouragement. Each skill is paired with a short instruction, such as picturing a calm or safe place, looking for meaning or a lesson, connecting with beliefs or hopes, slowing the body and mind, focusing on the present moment, taking a short break from stress, and speaking to oneself with kindness.

A separate reflection section asks practical questions, including what the person needs most right now, which IMPROVE skill could help, what might help them feel calmer, what they would say to a friend in the same situation, and what small step they can take next. These prompts could be used in therapy, social work direct work, school counselling, wellbeing check-ins, mentoring, family support or as part of a personal coping plan.

The tone is reassuring and focused on the immediate moment rather than trying to fix everything at once. It may be particularly suited to teenagers, older children with support, adults, parents, carers and clients learning DBT skills for anxiety, anger, panic, stress, low mood, trauma triggers or emotional overwhelm. Professionals could print it for a therapy folder, calm space, classroom wellbeing area, crisis plan or take-home reminder.

The handout includes a memorable reminder that the person does not need to solve everything today and can focus on getting through the moment one step at a time. The PDF credits Edita Stiborova (2026).
