Coping With Anxiety: A Young Person’s Guide & Workbook

Cover of the MindMate Support coping with anxiety workbook showing illustrated young people with speech bubbles saying they are worried, anxious and overwhelmed.

Use it in one-to-one support sessions, small group work or at home to help a young person understand their anxiety and build practical strategies over several weeks. The workbook is set out as a session-based programme, with a clear contents page covering worry and anxiety, the vicious cycle of anxiety, body sensations, unhelpful thinking habits, self-esteem, facing fears, worry skills, helpful techniques and a final review session.

The opening pages explain that anxiety is a normal human experience, while also recognising that it can affect different areas of life. Young people are encouraged to explore what anxiety looks and feels like for them, then practise skills through exercises, worksheets and take-home tasks. The tone is accessible and aimed at teenagers and college-aged young people rather than adults.

Practical tracking tools are included from the start. A ‘My Workbook Plan’ prompt helps the young person decide when and where they will complete tasks, and who they can ask for help if they feel stuck. Each session also includes 0 to 10 rating scales for mood, college, friendships, home and anxiety, giving school staff, counsellors or parents and carers a simple way to notice patterns and changes.

A weekly graph is provided so the young person can plot their anxiety score across the sessions and create a visual record of progress. The first session begins with a check-in called ‘How am I feeling today?’, using simple scales and visual cues to make reflection easier for children, teens and young people who may find open-ended emotional questions difficult.

Best suited to secondary school pupils, college students and young people receiving pastoral or mental health support, the workbook can support early conversations about anxiety as well as ongoing guided work. The cover identifies MindMate Support Team and Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
