Communication support and self-advocacy are at the centre of these printable cards for neurodivergent children and young people. The pack focuses on short, clear phrases pupils can point to or hand over when speaking is hard, especially in school, therapy, care settings or at home.
Print, cut out and keep the cards somewhere easy to reach, such as on a desk, in a lanyard wallet, calm box, planner or communication folder. They are designed for children and teens who may struggle to explain needs verbally, including autistic pupils, children with ADHD, neurodiverse learners, anxious children and those who use visual communication or AAC-style supports.
The visible pages are organised into practical sections, beginning with regulation and emotional support. Cards include phrases such as “I am overwhelmed”, “I need time to calm down”, “I need a break”, “I am feeling angry”, “I am feeling upset”, “I am feeling worried” and “I need reassurance”, each paired with a simple illustrated cue.
Communication needs are covered with direct prompts that can help reduce pressure during lessons, conversations or busy moments. Examples include asking someone to speak more slowly, use simple words, give one instruction at a time, repeat information, listen carefully, or allow time before answering.
Learning support cards focus on common classroom barriers, including not understanding, needing something explained again, wanting a demonstration, needing steps broken down, asking for written instructions, learning in a different way, not being ready to move on and needing extra time to finish work.
Health and body needs are also included, with cards for feeling unwell, being in pain, needing the toilet, food, a drink, medication, rest, or help when “my body does not feel right”. These visual cue cards may be useful for teachers, SENCOs, teaching assistants, parents, carers, social workers and therapists supporting a child to communicate needs safely and clearly.
