When Your Thoughts Won’t Switch Off: Coping Poster

Illustrated poster showing a radio on a park bench and advice for managing thoughts that will not switch off, including noticing thoughts, deciding whether action is needed and focusing attention elsewhere.

Parents, carers, school staff and counsellors supporting children or teenagers with racing thoughts may find this printable calming poster helpful. It offers a child-friendly way to handle overthinking, worries and repetitive “what if?” thoughts without expecting the mind to become completely quiet.

At home after a difficult day, in a classroom wellbeing corner, or during a counselling session, the poster can help a young person pause when their thoughts feel busy or stuck. It compares the mind to a radio that keeps playing, giving children, teens and adults a simple image for noticing anxious thoughts, rumination and mental chatter.

The first part explains that trying hard to stop thinking can sometimes make thoughts return more strongly. It encourages the reader to recognise what is playing in the background rather than listening closely to every word, with an alternative self-talk prompt: “There’s that thought again. I don’t need to work it out right now.”

A clear decision prompt asks whether the thought needs action. If there is something useful to do, the reader is invited to choose one small practical step; if not, they are reminded that they do not need to keep working the thought out. This makes the poster suitable for worry management, anxiety coping plans and emotional regulation conversations.

The final section suggests attention-shifting activities, including drawing or making something, listening closely to a song, counting backwards from 30, finding five items of the same colour, reading, completing a puzzle, playing a game, or talking about another topic. Parents, pastoral staff and therapists can print it as a visual reminder that thoughts may return, and attention can gently be brought back to the present activity.
