The useful phrases, conversation checklist and Five Pillars of Parenting signposted in the leaflet make it a practical tool for families who want help starting child safety conversations without feeling awkward or unsure. It is aimed especially at Muslim parents and carers who may be looking for a faith-sensitive parenting leaflet, safeguarding conversation guide, or advice on talking to children and teenagers about sensitive topics such as puberty, relationships, boundaries and online safety.
The leaflet recognises real barriers that many families experience, including differences in parenting styles across generations, topics that were not discussed in a parent’s own childhood, and the impact of growing up in different countries or cultures. It uses a reassuring tone, with reflections from Muslim parents about listening without judgement, being patient and open minded, and keeping the child’s needs at the centre when wider family expectations are involved.
Visible sections include an introduction, the three stages of a child’s upbringing, developing conversations as children grow up, finding the right moment, and resources such as Look Say Sing Play, Talk PANTS, online safety advice and Five Pillars of Parenting. These themes make it useful for parents of younger children, pre-teens and teenagers, as well as family support workers, school pastoral staff and community practitioners who are supporting Muslim families with protective conversations at home.
Families could use it before a planned conversation, during parenting workshops, in mosque or community family support sessions, or as a printable handout when discussing how to build trust with children. The content encourages regular, gentle conversations about feelings and experiences so that children are more likely to come to a trusted adult if they have a problem or need support.
